Deborah Small, a professor of marketing and psychology at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, said the windfall for St. Jude's involvement with Inspiration4 would go well beyond the $200 million fundraising goal itself. St. Jude, which specializes in researching and treating pediatric diseases, also stands to increase awareness of its mission. Her research on why people support charitable causes shows that donors generally favor causes that seem genuine and impactful.
What's more, she suggested, St. Jude's involvement helps cast Inspiration4's mission as a public-spirited one.
'It serves to benefit it by making this more of a societal, beneficial sort of mission,' Small said. 'It's not just a vanity trip for these millionaires or whoever. There's a bigger justification for it.'
The idea of partnering with Isaacman came through Ross Martin, president of the marketing agency Known and a member of St. Jude's digital and innovation advisory council. Shadyac said he was struck by the similarity of their world views.

In a surprise announcement on Monday, February 1, and scheduled to be brought to the masses through a Super Bowl ad, SpaceX has announced the first all civilian mission of their Dragon spacecraft, helmed by billionaire Jared Isaacman, in financial support of St. Jude.

The mission, dubbed Inspiration 4, will see four private individuals launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida atop a Dragon capsule, spending a few days in space before safely returning to Earth. SpaceX plans to use their Dragon capsule named “Resilience,” which is currently docked with the International Space Station as a part of NASA’s Crew-1 mission.
Commanding the mission will be Shift4 payments CEO and billionaire tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, who is also funding the mission. As part of the mission, Isaacman seeks to raise over $200 million in funds and support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Isaacman was also the co-founder of Draken International, the worlds largest contract aviation asset, serving to train U.S. military pilots by flying as simulated adversary aircraft. He is also a pilot, owning one of the world’s only privately owned MiG 29s, as well as having been a pilot in the former Black Diamond Jet Team.

“Inspiration4 is the realization of a lifelong dream and a step towards a future in which anyone can venture out and explore the stars. I appreciate the tremendous responsibility that comes with commanding this mission and I want to use this historic moment to inspire humanity while helping to tackle childhood cancer here on Earth,” Isaacman said in a statement.
One of the remaining three seats has already been spoken for by a yet unnamed healthcare worker for the hospital, believed to be a woman. The other two seats however, are up for grabs by everyday people, with the first seat being raffled to one lucky individual who supports St Jude, and the second being given to a chosen business entrepreneur within Isaacman’s company, Shift4Shop.
Each crew member represents a different pillar of community. For the unnamed healthcare worker, the pillar of hope is represented. For the entrepreneur, the pillar of prosperity. Most importantly, the winner of the public donation raffle represents the pillar of generosity. Isaacman’s role as commander and financier will serve as the pillar of leadership.
The crew is expected to be selected at the end of February, with announcements expected in early March.
